1. Patients often get only bits and pieces of information about their health, and that makes it hard to see the whole picture. Reading your notes can connect the dots, helping you to become more engaged and more in control of your health. And once you have access, remind yourself to read them. Our surveys of thousands of patients show that the vast majority report important benefits from doing so.
2. You’re not the only one learning about opennotes. Doctors, other clinicians and health systems are also learning about sharing notes, and your providers may not yet offer secure online access to your notes. Opennotes mark a big change in the culture of medicine, and such change can take time!
3. The OpenNotes team is working hard to spread this practice and you can see how many health systems in the U.S. and Canada share notes on our map: opennotes.org/join/map/
