Lisa Cooper brings considerable experience to OpenNotes, especially in working with underrepresented minority populations. The Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, she is an internationally renowned general internist whose research has focused on patient-centered strategies for improving outcomes and overcoming racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. She has conducted numerous studies to explore and better define barriers (e.g., patient attitudes, beliefs, and preferences) to equitable care and mechanisms for disparities in health status and healthcare (e.g., patient-physician communication, race discordance between patients and physicians). She leads the Center for Population Health and Health Disparities at Johns Hopkins and has been honored with a MacArthur “genius” award and election to the National Academy of Medicine (the former IOM).
